Writing Poetry with Feeling and Memories

For me, the process of writing poetry is about writing feelings, and those feelings come from memories. There is nothing worth writing about if it doesn’t spark some kind of memory in you. This is true in that the best poetry elicits strong emotions from the reader. And there is a close connection between emotions and memories in my mind.

When I write about a forest, a lake, a grave, time, or ancestral bones, I am writing my past experiences of these things. I am pulling on my past feelings and memories of when I was in those places or situations long ago. It can be therapeutic to write about your feelings. While memories can be good or bad, in themselves they can be used for writing expressive poems or stories.

I encourage all of you to look deeply into your lives, your memories, and examine the feelings those memories bring out in you. And if you like to write, use that material for whatever genre you write in, poems, stories, or journaling as well.

Thanks for reading,

Sharon
